Glass balustrades for stairs and voids

Staircases are where glass earns its keep. A run of raked panels opens up a hallway, and a curved staircase in glass is the piece people notice first. We template every stair on site, because no two flights are the same.

Spiral staircase glass with black handrail

Options

Raked panels on spigots or standoffs

Toughened panels cut to the angle of your stair and fixed to the stringer or the treads.

Curved staircase glass

Bent toughened or laminated panels that follow the stair radius. We template these on site, because every curve is different.

Void balustrades

Frameless panels around stair voids and landings, lined up with the stair run so it all reads as one.

Handrails

Timber, stainless or black steel handrails where they are needed, mounted to the wall or to the glass.

What we install to

The numbers we work to on every job, so it passes the first time.

  • We set the glass at least 865mm high from the stair nosing, and 1000mm on landings.
  • We keep every opening to 125mm or less.
  • We use toughened or laminated Grade A safety glass to AS 1288.
  • We template every stair before the glass is ordered, so the panels fit the flight you actually have.

  3. We order your glass

Your glass is cut, toughened and polished to the measure.

Questions people ask

Can you do curved glass for a spiral or helical staircase?

Yes. We template the curve on site, have the panels bent and toughened to that template, then fit them on standoffs or in a channel. Curved glass is usually in within 7 days.

Do glass stair balustrades need a handrail?

Under the National Construction Code a stair needs a handrail on at least one side. Mount it on the wall and the glass stays clear, or mount it to the glass if you prefer.

How is the glass fixed to the stairs?

Usually with stainless standoff pins into the stringer, or spigots into the treads. Which one depends on how your stair is built, and we check that at the measure.

How long does staircase glass take?

Straight and curved stairs are usually done within 7 days of approval.

What are the requirements for stair balustrades in Australia?

Under the National Construction Code, any stair or landing with a fall of one metre or more needs a barrier. It has to be at least 865mm high, measured straight up from the line of the stair nosings, and 1000mm on landings, and no opening can let a 125mm sphere through. You also need a handrail on at least one side.

Can you match glass to an existing balcony balustrade?

Yes. We match the glass thickness, the fixing type and the hardware finish, so the stair and the balcony read as one run.
