Glass pool fencing that passes the barrier inspection
A glass pool fence has one job before it has a look: it has to keep a child out of the water and pass a barrier inspection. We install to AS 1926.1-2012, we know what the inspector measures, and we build the fence so it passes the first time.

Options
Frameless on spigots
12mm toughened panels on stainless spigots, core drilled or base plated into concrete, pavers or decking. It is the cleanest look you can get.
Frameless in channel
The panels sit in a recessed channel, so no spigots show. It suits new builds, because the channel has to be cast in.
Semi-frameless on posts
10mm panels between slim aluminium or stainless posts. It costs less, and posts cope better with uneven ground.
Gates
Frameless glass gates on soft-close self-closing hinges with a compliant magnetic latch. They open outward, away from the pool, because that is what the rules ask for.
Spa barriers
We fit curved and straight barriers around spas and plunge pools, and lockable lid setups where they are allowed.
Finishes
Spigots and posts come in polished, satin, matte black or bronze. Near the coast we use marine-grade 2205 stainless.
Gate hardware
We use soft-close self-closing hinges such as Polaris, set the magnetic latch at the compliant height, and size the hinge panel to suit the gate.
Handrails and steps
Stainless pool handrails, and glass panels around steps and level changes so the barrier follows the ground.
What we install to
The numbers we work to on every job, so it passes the first time.
- We set the barrier at least 1200mm high, measured from the finished ground on the outside of the fence.
- We keep gaps under the barrier and between panels to 100mm or less, so a child cannot squeeze through.
- We leave a 900mm non-climbable zone outside the barrier, which means no footholds, planters or furniture a child could climb.
- Our gates self-close from any position, self-latch, open outward, and have the latch release at least 1500mm off the ground.
- We use 12mm toughened glass to AS 1288, on spigots and posts rated for the panel and the wind load.

Questions people ask
Do I need a permit to install a pool fence in Victoria?
Usually, yes. A new or replacement pool barrier normally needs a building permit from a registered building surveyor, and every pool and spa in Victoria has to be registered with your local council. Once the fence is in, it is inspected, a certificate of barrier compliance goes to council, and it is re-inspected every four years. We build to pass that inspection and can point you to an inspector.
What standard does a glass pool fence have to meet?
If your pool went in after 1 May 2013, the inspector checks it against AS 1926.1-2012. Older pools are judged on the standard that applied when they were built, but the core rules do not change: at least 1200mm high, no gap over 100mm, a 900mm non-climbable zone, and a gate that self-closes, self-latches and opens outward.
Can a glass pool fence go on pavers or decking?
Yes. On concrete, or pavers over a slab, we core drill the spigots in. On timber or composite decking we use base-plated spigots bolted through to the joists, and on soil or lawn we pour a footing first. We check what is under the surface when we measure.
Does salt air affect glass pool fencing?
It gets at the metal, not the glass. Near the bay we specify marine-grade 2205 stainless spigots and hinges, because they hold up against tea staining and pitting far better than standard 316 grade. Rinse them with fresh water every few months and they stay clean.
How long does installation take?
Most home pool fences take us one to two days once the glass arrives. From approving the quote, most fences are in within 7 days.
How wide is a glass pool fence gate?
Most frameless glass pool gates are 800mm to 900mm wide. The opening and what the hinges can carry set the width, and the gap between the gate and the hinge panel cannot be more than 100mm.
Can a pool gate swing inwards?
No. A pool gate has to open outward, away from the pool, and self-close and self-latch from any position. If it swings into the pool area, it fails the inspection.
How far apart are the spigots on a glass pool fence?
Two spigots per panel is standard, each set about a quarter of the panel width in from the edge. Wide or tall panels, and exposed coastal sites, can need them closer together or a third spigot.
