How to compare glass quotes
Two quotes for the same shower screen can look very different and both be fair. Here is how to work out what you are actually being quoted for.
Glass thickness and type
The quote should say the thickness, and whether the glass is toughened or laminated. Frameless shower screens should be 10mm. Pool fences and balustrades should be 12mm, or laminated where there is no top rail. When one quote is a lot cheaper, thinner glass is often the reason.
Hardware
Look for the finish and the grade. Brushed brass hinges cost more than chrome. On exterior work near the bay, marine-grade 2205 stainless costs more than 316 and lasts years longer. If a quote does not name the grade, it is probably standard grade.
What is included
Measure, supply, installation, silicone, removing the old screen or fence, disposal and clean-up should all be listed. On cheap quotes, core drilling into concrete for the spigots is often an extra, so check it is in there.
Compliance
A pool fence or balustrade quote should say what standard it is built to: AS 1926.1-2012 for pool barriers, AS 1288 and the National Construction Code for balustrades. If it does not say, ask.
Lead time and payment
Toughened glass is cut and toughened to order. We usually install within 7 days, so ask every quote how long theirs will take. Be wary of anyone asking for a large deposit before they have even measured. A deposit when the glass is ordered and the balance on completion is standard.
Warranty
Ask what is covered and for how long. Workmanship, glass and hardware are three different things, and a warranty can cover one without the others. Get it in writing on the quote.
